This Persian rug has been somewhere…done something…and come out the other side still standing. From circa 1920, this gallery size at 4’9 x 9’10 is a generous rectangular proportion that works great in center-hall entries, beneath a console in a wide corridor, or in a spot that really needs the love of this particular shape to make the moment. The field is midnight navy, and it is covered from edge to edge in a small-scale boteh which are teardrop-shaped paisley forms that have been woven into Persian rugs for centuries, each one a tiny world of rust, terracotta, dusty pink, coral and sky blue, arranged in orderly diagonal rows across its dark ground. The effect from a distance is like starfield...a deep cosmos of repeating motifs that draws the eye in and holds it.
The border is a layered system of ivory ground stripes carrying a sinuous vine and what I see as a caterpillar design with small hooked paisleys on an ivory ground, flanked by narrow rust guards. It frames the field without competing with it.
This rug has lived. There is scattered wear across the field, it's had a century of the good life on its vegetable dyed wool. There is a darker spot on the side border, noted and photographed. The construction underneath remains stout and solid.
