Woven by Afshar tribespeople in southeastern Persia during the early 1900s, it carries all the things that make these tribal rugs recognizable and loved. It showcases three stacked medallions that anchor the field, surrounded by angular tribal motifs and a deep indigo ground that has mellowed beautifully with overtime. The colors have softened into that hard to fake palette only a century of life can give…dusty coral reds, faded sky blues, warm ivory, and navy all settling together in a way that feels collected rather than designed.
And this old Afshar has lived. The wool pile is worn low throughout, allowing the drawing of the rug to take center stage. All the beauty from age adds to the character and story rather than detract from it. It is the kind of rug people spend years trying to find because the wear has happened organically over time and you can say it has that real deal shabby chic style now.
Afshar rugs are known for their sturdy tribal weaving traditions and distinctive geometric designs.
