Floral and Paisley Fine Antique Persian Ferahan Rug / 4'2 x 6'5 Rug #3583ML

Regular price $1,800.00

This antique Persian Ferahan is finely woven and built like an old house. It is stout, solid and made with very fine handspun wool. Its natural dyes are well aged, faded madder root red, charcoal, soft rose, espresso brown and small flashes of green and golden yellow, all against a warm ivory ground. It has over a century of life, woven around 1900.

The field is packed with rows of boteh, or paisleys, gathered around a strong central medallion. This ancient motif is often interpreted as a seed or flame and is associated with life, growth and continuity. Between the boteh is a world of small-scale art, with tiny vines, budding flowers and delicate botanical details. The guard borders carry continuous floral chains, while the larger border is filled with beautifully drawn blossoms and more intricate vine work. All the details here are intentional and illustrates the hand of a skilled weaver, exhibiting truly crispy/fine art.

Ferahan rugs were finely woven pieces made for Persian aristocrats and affluent households in the old days, and the quality is easy to see here. The drawing is detailed, the knotting is tight, and even with its age and wear, the design still reads with strength.

The pile is low and worn in areas, but this is no delicate antique. It has a sturdy handle, strong construction and is ready to go on for generations more. Please note that one corner has a small area of loss, what I affectionately call a little “dog bite,” from years of age, use and life. This Persian can easily take on life and be styled in a high traffic zone. Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool.
