Warm and honeyed, with a hundred years of beautiful detail to get lost in. This circa 1920s Persian Tabriz brings together dusty rose, soft pink, ivory, warm cocoa and walnut brown, with touches of mellow gold and little ribbons of teal blue. Those blues are such a bonus with tracing curves, outlining motifs, popping up ever so sweetly.
The palette of this beautiful old Persian rug shifts with the way it catches light and the direction you view the rug. It can be softer and lighter and then from another setting, look warmer and richer. Same rug, different mood. And somewhere in there is my sister’s dog, Cookie, doing an excellent job of camouflaging. She basically comes in the same palette.
Handwoven in vegetable dyed wool, its fine, tight weave carries the intricate curvilinear work that Tabriz’s respected weavers are known for. Flowers, scrolling vines, and so much movement within that beautifully layered design. Signed at the top and made to order for someone a century ago, it’s a personal piece of woven art ready for its next home. This gorgeous rug brings a lot of what we crave and omits a dominant color that most Persians are dressed in, which is red.
Low pile with scattered wear, full of age and character, and still wonderfully durable for everyday living.
