Square antique Caucasians are the kind of thing that almost make you stop mid sentence. Because they barely exist. Most village weavers were making long runners, room sizes, rectangular formats…practical proportions for daily life and trade. But a nearly square Caucasian like this? Rare territory. And somehow this one survived beautifully.
From the 4th quarter of the 19th Century, she’s packed with age, tribal energy, geometric flower forms, angular border work, and all the little quirky symbols that make Caucasian rugs feel alive and deeply human. The navy field against that warm camel ground is MAGIC…especially because the palette stays surprisingly neutral while still having personality. It can hang with earthy interiors, minimal spaces, layered old homes, or modern rooms that need soul.
The abrash streak running through the field feels like a fingerprint left behind by the weaver herself…those natural shifts in vegetable dyed wool where one batch of dye softly moves into the next. No factory could fake this kind of movement even if it tried.
Low pile with a floppy handle and excellent condition for its age. The wool foundation and tight weave keep it sturdy despite the age. This one has presence without screaming for attention…and square rugs with this kind of authenticity rarely come around. Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool.
