Small Nomadic Vintage Rug / 3' x 5'7 Persian Baluch Rug #4403

Regular price $675.00

This small nomadic Persian Baluch rug from the late 1800s is a beautiful example of early tribal weaving, where utility, symbolism, and circumstance all show up in the final piece.

The pile is low and worn, with a knotted wool field that’s softened significantly over time. You’ll notice the top and bottom widths differ slightly, a result of handweaving and the realities of nomadic life. This kind of irregularity often comes from changes in tension, weather, or loom setup as the rug was woven…it’s not a flaw, it’s evidence of age, movement, and human hands at work.

What makes this piece especially interesting is the use of two weaving techniques. The main field is knotted pile, while the ends transition into kilim woven finishes, a practical and decorative choice common in Baluch rugs. These flatwoven ends reduce bulk and reflect the weaver’s need for portability and efficiency. Baluch rugs were commonly used inside nomadic tents, either laid on the floor or hung along the walls for insulation and privacy. Their looms were small and portable, allowing weavers to work while moving seasonally.

The design is deeply tribal. The repeated octagonal and compartmented motifs are often associated with protective symbols, enclosure, and order…visual structures meant to guard the household and mark territory. Small hooked elements and angular forms appear throughout, a hallmark of Baluch weaving, referencing animals, shelter, and movement rather than literal floral imagery. The overall composition feels intentional but not rigid, shaped by tradition rather than strict pattern.

The color palette stays earthy and grounded…brick red, deep indigo, softened camel, and dark brown tones, all achieved through natural dyes that have aged into a muted, cohesive whole. This scatter rug is 100% wool and has a beautiful, floppy handle.

Baluch rugs were woven by nomadic groups across eastern Persia and surrounding regions, often under challenging conditions. They were made to be used daily, folded, transported, and lived with. This rug carries that history clearly…worn, imperfect, and still very much intact.

A free rug pad will come along to keep this little treasure nice and snug.
