If you fall in love with this scatter rug at first glance, who could blame you? It’s a powerful old soul, beautifully crafted and deeply expressive.
This Serab comes from a small village in the Sabalan mountain area of Northwest Persia, woven in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Serab rugs are especially prized for their use of undyed camel hair, and here you see it framing the piece with its raw, natural beauty. This is a signature of the region and what makes Serabs stand apart; they carry an earthy honesty that speaks straight to the soul.
The tribal diamond medallions burst with color from vegetable-dyed wool…soft pink, various blues, dusty yellow, greens, tan, chocolate tones and more, contrasting against the warm camel ground. The whimsical floral motifs scattered sporadically without a rhythm along the borders add layers of personality, while the charming wavy ends remind you that this is entirely handwoven, with all the quirks and authenticity that only human hands can create.
This rug is sturdy yet soft in character, with a great handle and generations of life still in it. Its scale and proportion make it an easy styling piece, whether layered, placed in a foyer, or set in a cozy corner, or maybe even bedside…it brings raw elegance and history into the home.
A rare find, earthy and real, and one that connects you directly to the artistry of Serab’s female weavers.
