This antique Lilihan has that electric kind of energy old Persian rugs can carry when the colors, wool, and drawing all hit at once. The navy field absolutely packs a punch here…a midnight blue loaded with saturated jewel tones in raspberry, coral, deep blush, dark ruby, soft celadon, ivory, and hints of dusty rose all throughout.
Woven around 1910, this one has movement everywhere. Two large vase forms anchor the lower field, they look like pomegranates, sending flowering bouquets upward through the rug in curling sprays and scrolling vines. At the center sits a large floral medallion with a soft clover or lozenge-like geometry. Floral sprays climb and curl through the field, too. The vines, blossoms, and palmettes feel loose and alive and the rug is not overcrowded, so the elements all stand independently, and beautifully. Lilihan rugs are loved for this softer, more fluid drawing style compared to some of the more rigid village weavings nearby.
They were often woven with a slightly more flexible structure and handle too…and you can feel that here. It has body and durability, but also a nice bend and drape to the weave that makes it feel luxurious in motion.
Low pile with age related wear throughout…but still stout and solid and totally OK for high traffic areas, like a gorgeous entry! Vegetable dyed wool.
