A little garden scene you can bring indoors. This Chinese pictorial rug, circa 1960s, has a warm sandy-camel ground, with deep indigo, denim or sailor blue, teal, olive, and touches of ivory and dusty mauve forming a wonderfully charming landscape.
Two spotted deer stand on either side of a rocky outcrop, one lowering its head toward a flower while the other looks upward. Above them, a long-legged crane perches among bamboo and flowering branches. There’s so much personality in the little details: the deer’s delicate spots, the bird’s patterned feathers, and the blue leaves reaching in every direction.
The drawing spreads outward from the deep blue rocks, with branches carrying your eye across the scene. Generous open space lets each animal and blossom stand out against that honeyed ground. With no heavy border enclosing it, the whole piece feels like a painting rendered in wool.
Beautiful on the floor, and just as lovely hung where you can enjoy its little inhabitants at eye level. This would also be a dream in a nursey or kid's room. It is in pretty great condition. Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool. It has a silky hand and velvet-y sheen/glow. Soft to the touch and just darling to collect.
