A little architecture, a little garden, and a whole lot of golden yellow. This Anatolian prayer-design rug has such a wonderful drawing, with a stepped prayer niche framed by two slender blue-green-gray-ish columns and what appears to be a decorative mosque lamp suspended between them.
Above the niche, soft pistachio green holds flowering stems, while the broad, dusty-blue border is filled with angular blossoms, hooked leaves, and individual little shapes. Look closely and you’ll see the small shifts in the drawing, showing off the charming irregularities of work made by hand.
There’s a beautiful balance between that open turmeric-golden field and the busier borders surrounding it. Your eye follows the hanging ornament upward, through the stepped arch, and into the flowers above.
Steeped with saturated natural dyes that have mellowed over time, this Anatolian Turkish rug from circa 1920 has low pile, scattered wear, and frayed edges and ends. A wonderfully expressive old weaving that would be beautiful displayed on a wall or on the floor, where you can take in every little detail. Handwoven with 100% vegetable dyed wool with a floppy handle. It is soft and folds up like a handkerchief.
